Proper disposal of smoke alarm?

I decided to get rid of our standard smoke alarms because they contain Amercini 241, and replaced it with a photo-electric one, not sure what its really called. But, I figured since it contains this radioactive material I should call a fire company to see how to properly dispose of the old smoke alarms. The lady said we can throw them out in the trash, and I even asked her about the Amercini 241, but she said it was fine and its not a hazard. So now its sitting in our dumpster outside, does anybody think this is safe? or ok? Im kind of worriied.

Perfectly safe. The battery in it is much more dangerous than the tiny amount of radioactive material. In ALMOST every locality in the US you can just chuck it in the trash. There are a few safety Nazi towns though (i.e. Santa Barbara, CA) that don’t allow it, but who is going to know? If you live in a town like this, you are supposed to mail it back to the manufacturer. You take out and recycle the battery first. Then write on the detector itself “for disposal” with a magic marker. Box the sucker up and mail it to the address on the back of the detector.

I certainly won’t be doing any of that junk, but feel free if you want to. BTW some companies require that you not only pay postage but also pay a disposal fee.
