South West Alarms

In the southwest corner of Florida are the Everglades, 7 million hectares of low-lying wetlands, a unique and delicate ecosystem of great ecological importance. Constantly under threat from human activity, the area supports a variety of unique animal and plant life.
Driving along the Tamiami Trail, under a dull gray sky, we were surrounded by an endless flat landscape and seemingly boring. From Lake Okeechobee in the north, the land drops to only 2 inches per mile, and the edges toward the Gulf of Mexico. However, the mixture of soil and fresh sea water and salt with the constant ebb and flow of the seasons dramatically Everglades surprising.
The rainy season begins in May, flooding the lake to create a leaf river system that drains slowly over a period of months. We leave canoe in the peace and tranquility of the mangroves for a couple of hours, although the adventurous can take a week to navigate the desert Waterway. easily visible in the waters clear were the hallmark of the roots of mangrove tree, adapted to survive in the water, salt marsh where other trees would drown.
Off the road the Everglades National Park, found abandoned and dusty Wagon Wheel Road. This old logging trail, abandoned when the registration was stopped in 1950, is now guarded by crocodiles. flocks of these large reptiles floating in the river, road and lounge on benches. I swear that our every step, and moved awfully fast when disturbed.
We stayed in Everglades City, a former Pioneer camp consisting of a pub, a school and an ice cream shop. The city has hardly changed since the nineteenth 19, but our lodging in a log cabin was very cozy.
The next day we took a boat trip in the Ten Thousand Islands Archipelago, finding between the small tree covered islands, snowy egrets, great blue heron and osprey nesting. We also saw dolphins, shy carry out here, but much better than in a warehouse somewhere.
North of town is Big Cypress Swamp, a large area of sand islands, wet meadows, dry meadows, marshes and mangrove forests in estuaries. The cypress cover about one third of the swamps, growing in long chains big name to the area. We took one of the boardwalks of the zone along the edge of this big area, primary, seeking a Florida panther and black bears. I'm not sure if he was disappointed to see only a couple of timid deer playing hide and seek as they watched us pass. We also saw mahogany and tropical hardwood hammocks strangling fig alarming. The latter seeds itself into another tree and then grows down to earth, wrapping his trusted host a hand like iron fist.
After only a couple of days we left the area, return to the modern world, a world that unfortunately exists in direct competition to the life of the Everglades.
