What is the best alarm system and monitoing for an apartment or condominium?

My roommate live in a tri-level townhome is about 1200 square feet. We are looking for an alarm system for our security and peace of mind. I have been researching different options, but I want opinions on the most efficient and control options. We are two college girls who want to feel safe. Our area of the complex is not terrible, but not the lighting is not very large and close been stolen. We have taken measures such as keeping the lights on and doors shut, but we want the extra piece of mind has an alarm. The views and comments are appreciated!
