Home Security Tips For Women

Despite the number of strides made for women since our grandparent’s generation, one truth still remains: women are thought of as easier targets for criminals. While some might dismiss safety tips specifically for women as mere hand-wringing, they’ve proven over time to be helpful at keeping numerous mothers and daughters safe and secure. From being taught to keep your keys in hand when walking in a parking garage or parking lot to never admitting you’re living or traveling alone to strangers, certain advice geared specifically towards women really pays off for safety and security.

So accordingly, it makes sense to have advice specifically for women, especially women living alone. From young college students to widows adjusting to a new way of life, there are a number of home security tips that significantly decrease the chances of having any problems with your living situation.

Pay attention to your name. Robbers casing a joint often look at the names on mailboxes to see how many people live in each apartment and what their names are. If they see one obviously female resident living alone, they might try to gain entry by ringing the buzzer and claiming to be from a utilities company. Don’t list your full name anywhere that’s in plain sight. Use your first and middle initial instead, in the phone book, on your mail box…anywhere your name can be seen. This ambiguity is a huge help in keeping you and your home well protected.

Change your answering machine message. This tip is especially important for older women living alone. Anyone can call up your house, and if the voice that picks up on the machine sounds elderly and female, you’re going to be seen as an easier target for robberies. Have a male friend or relative record a voicemail message for you instead, so that it sounds like there is someone else around the house, too.

Trust your instincts. It may sound silly, but good instincts, or going on your first impression, can literally be a life-saver. If something seems off when the cable company sends someone over to fix your cable, don’t just let them into your apartment: ask them to slip their ID under the door, and call the cable company to confirm that this is one of their employees. It might take a couple of extra minutes, but if it’s a real employee, he won’t mind, and you’ll be able to maintain your peace of mind. Likewise, don’t advertise to people you don’t know very well that you live alone. It’s really no one’s business, and keeping this information private is the best idea for maintaining your home security.

Consider your back-up options. Depending on your state’s laws, it might not be a bad idea to carry pepper spray, especially for entering or leaving your building or home when it’s early in the morning or very late at night. Another thing to consider is actually investing in a home alarm system. For apartment dwellers who aren’t considering owning a home for quite some time, the latest systems on the market are often ones you can take with you and use someplace else. For older women living alone, a home alarm system also serves the purpose of allowing you to be monitored, in case you have a health emergency. Many alarm systems come with panic buttons you can wear around your neck, and pushing it will trigger the police and paramedics, which could literally save your life.
