Everyone Deserves Home Security

Homes come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny studio apartments to duplexes to two- or three-story homes.  Initially nearly all home security systems were designed thinking of the homeowner who wants to protect a house.  However, with advances in technology, people who own or rent apartments now have more options.  Here are six steps to increase home security for apartment dwellers:

1) Request that the locks be changed prior to moving in. The previous tenant could have made copies of the keys and not returned all sets when they departed.  Worrying about who has access to your apartment should not be something that you have to deal with.  Your landlord should understand this, as it is a question of basic security.  Some landlords even make it their practice to change the locks before renting out an apartment.

2) Understand building security procedures.  In most apartment buildings, there is a front door that can be opened with a buzzer.  Do not let people you do not know into the building.  Also, if you buzz guests up to your apartment, be sure that they know not to let in others.  This basic principle will go a long way in improving home security for all of the units in the building.

3) Play it safe from your apartment.  If you have any windows that can be accessed from trees or you are on the lower floors, talk to your landlord about having extra security installed.  This may include bars or window locks. Do not let in people that you do not know, regardless of what they tell you.  In addition to a standard lock, make sure that your apartment door has a deadbolt or chain.  Prior to letting people through your door, check the peephole.

4) Install an alarm system.  There are variants of the standard home alarm system that can be used in apartments today.  Prior to installing a system, you can discuss with your landlord the best options for you.  Using wireless components is particularly important so as to avoid making many holes in the walls.  This could include sensors on the windows, depending on the floor level you are on.  For larger apartments you may also want motion detectors in long hallways.

5) Have functioning smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.  Fires and gas explosions can be especially damaging in apartment buildings because multiple homes are affected.  Immediate detection of threats will save lives and also prevent destruction of property.

6) Get to know building residents and your landlord.  From the moment you move in, learn who your neighbors are and say hello when you see them.  This will help keep everyone safe because you will realize when someone does not belong in the building.  Many buildings have a common space where notices are posted, and some even have regular meetings.  These meetings or bulletin boards can be used to share information about security procedures, building norms, and other useful information.  Creating a sense of community in an apartment building not only enhances your home security, it also makes living there a more enjoyable experience.  Your building mates may even become some of your good friends.
