Whether it is the college life or those first few years after graduating, more often than not people are going to be living with roommates. Granted, the majority of the time these roommates are your personal friends or acquaintances, so trust is never really an issue. However, there are occasions – such as that freaky kid you had to share your freshman dorm with who never left the room, never threw out his trash and played “Need for Speed” as if it were his job – where people may need to reconsider their home security situation. That is not to say that you should be wary of your roommates and distrust them immediately; it is simply referring to the fact that you should be a bit cautious.

In today’s modern world, it is obvious that anything can happen. Although there is normally a code of conduct with regards to sharing a house or an apartment with complete strangers, some people chose not to respect it as much as others. Making sure that a level of trust and responsibility exists in any new living situation is essential, but at the same time precautions need to be taken to ensure that your personal belongings and overall sanity remain safe and intact.

The first and most basic home security tactic that new roommates should always consider is simple: get to know each other. By sitting down and spending some time with those new flat mates, you can get a sense of what type of person they may be. Are they the traditional room dweller, the classic slob, a crazy partier or simply an irresponsible individual? Through dedicating a few days to a week hanging out and talking to your new roommates, it is then possible to decide what additional security measures should be taken.

A room dweller and a classic slob are both normally pretty harmless. Granted, individual areas may smell occasionally and you may find yourself cleaning the kitchen a bit more than necessary, but with regards to home security you can pretty much be certain that your items are safe and sound. When it comes to the last two character types: the crazy partier and the irresponsible, you may need to be a bit more prepared.

With regards to the irresponsible roommate, it may be necessary to step it up a notch on the home security level. Since this type of person constantly forgets to lock the door before they leave or manages to always lose their keys, a good idea would be to consider installing a home alarm system in the residence. Although the ones that come with monitoring systems are the most highly recommended, a self-install alarm will work just as fine. That way, if a house is left unlocked, an alarm will simply provide that extra security for those just-in-case situations.
